Montessori Day School In The Woods
"It's in every one of us to be wise"
history

Children in CostumeMontessori Day School began out of a vision I had for my own child to continue his Montessori education in the elementary years. The Montessori method honors the innate intelligence within children and provides a means where education is used to stimulate a child’s natural tendency for understanding the world around him. My vision was supported by like-minded parents also wanting to fulfill their desires for their children’s future.

In 2001 Montessori Day School opened in with 9 students in an Elementary I class room. Interest in our school grew and in 2002 we expanded both the programs and space by beginning our second year with Toddler, Primary, and Elementary I class rooms in the Unity Church of Charleston’s education wing. By 2004, serving 56 children from the greater Charleston area, we again grew to include an Elementary II classroom. To better serve the community, the school became a non-profit organization, began offering Financial Assistance Programs, and became a provider of the DSS/ABC program. In 2005 a modular classroom was donated, allowing Elementary I and II to have more space and maximize their independent learning and exploration.

As we look to the 2007-2008 school year and beyond, the vision for Montessori Day School’s future unfolds to include program enrichment, upgrades to the present building, an activity bus and further expansion with the beginning of an innovative middle school program for children ages 12-15. Maria Montessori referred to this age group as “erdkinder,” or children of the soil, and believed their best learning environment is a land-based school. The use of land on John’s Island has been donated to us for the middle school, Montessori Day School in the Woods.

To realize our vision, we are embarking on “The Friends and Family of Montessori Day School; fund raising campaign. Our goal is to raise $150,000 over the next six months.

As a community we came together, created, and grew to what we are today. It is with the same intention in our hearts that we will realize this next phase of our dream. Together we can do this.

Thank you for your continued support,
