Montessori Day School in the Woods Middle School program focuses on providing students with the tools for self-motivated learning. Lessons are based on a student’s individual needs and abilities. The Montessori theory of “Erdkinder’” or children of the soil, places the students in a land-based environment.

The basic language, communication and math skills will be applied to everyday life. garden planning and design, small business operation and grounds maintenance are a few examples of the daily routine within a sustainable community.

Woman Doing YogaThe Curriculum

The curriculum includes studies in history, geography, the natural sciences, research and creative writing. Electives to the program include a variety of experiences in music such as drumming and classical instruments; apprenticeships with local artists; creative movement including yoga and soccer; foreign languages of choice and strategy games like chess.

The goal is to offer each middle school student unique opportunities for self-discovery and self expression. The total integration of educational, physical, economical and social experiences will lead them towards independence, strength of character and an increased capacity for responsibility.

In meeting the full needs of the child, we must remember that each individual is a whole and complete spiritual being with his or her own unique purpose in this life. While we do not teach religion, this program will foster spiritual growth and development throughout the curriculum.

The Erd kinder experience

The Erd kinder experience...takes place in a rural, self-sustaining
agricultural setting, completely immersed in nature.

This experience offers youth ages 12 and up unique opportunities for
self-discovery and self-expression. The total integration of
educational, physical, economical and social experiences will lead them
towards independence, strength of character and an increased capacity
for responsibility.

While the academics, practical life and cultural experiences abound, the
primary goal is to create a safe place that fosters acceptance of self
and cooperation with others.

Youth will discover their integral place in society and in the world.

  • cultivating the earth
  • living off the land
  • discovering one’s place
  • giving back to the world

Boys GardeningOur Mission

All Children, regardless of ethnic or socio-economic status,
will experience academic progress and freedom of expression through the
Montessori model and a diverse cultural arts program at Montessori Day School.

Our global curriculum is designed to help develop the qualities
of the child’s spiritual, physical and creative tendencies.

Montessori Day School in the Woods for the adolescent 12 – 15 years
honors learning through experience within the natural settings of our
diverse ecology.

Maria Montessori’s work began with preschoolers and continued up to
university levels. Her discoveries regarding youths age 12 - 18 years
revealed their innate desire to investigate the world beyond the family
toward discovery of society and the roles they will play as
self-sufficient, independent citizens.

The proper environment for these children is the Farm School. Maria
Montessori’s affectionate term for these children is “Erdkinder” or
“Children of the Soil”.
